Most people think of slavery in the past tense. Unfortunately, slavery still exists, even in the USA. Now we call it “human trafficking.” People right here in Indiana are being trafficked for the sex trade. Other people are tricked into fake jobs that end up being unpaid work under duress. Children and young adults are among those trafficked, but people of all ages can be victims.
To learn more about the issue of human trafficking, the public is invited to a program at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 22 at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 3628 W. Johnson Rd. LaPorte. The program is sponsored by the Michigan City Affiliate of the American Association of University Women.
Speaker for the program is Michael Velasco, a board member of Sharing Hope Across the Region Through Education. SHARE is a human rights organization which is focused on advocating for victims of human trafficking.
AAUW also is advocating for survivors of human trafficking. Part of the advocacy involves posting of the National Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888, #endsextrafficking) in all public places as well as on the internet. Another issue involves passing Vacatur laws in all states. Vacatur laws allow courts to vacate convictions for criminal activity for persons who are forced into such activity. These laws allow a rescued victim to better get on with their lives without criminal records. Eighteen states have such laws on the books, but Indiana is not one of them.
Walk-ins aare welcome.
Beautiful Savior’s “Trunk-or-Treat” event will be offered for children ages 1-12.
Beautiful Savior’s “Trunk-Or-Treat” event will be a fun, safe, non-threatening alternative to traditional Trick-or-Treating.
Parents are encouraged to bring their children, dressed in costumes if desired, to Beautiful Savior’s campus on November 2nd, 2013 beginning at 3:00pm. Members of Beautiful Savior will decorate the trunks and tailgates of their vehicles and load them with candy and treats. Parents are encouraged to walk from “trunk” to “trunk” with their children as they receive the candy. The scare factor will be kept to a minimum so parents may feel comfortable enough to bring their youngest of children.

On Sunday April 14th, Beautiful Savior will be blessed to have numerous young singers lending their voices to our worship service. The Festival Singers of Michigan Lutheran High School, St. Joseph, Michigan, will be contributing four anthems to our worship service. Michigan Lutheran High School is funded and organized by the WELS churches in the southwestern area of Michigan and the Northwestern area of Indiana.
While you might say that Michigan Lutheran High School is like any high school in regards to the students, the curriculum, and the extra-curricular activities, there are many things that make it different. Jesus Christ, and the gospel message, is the central focus of everything MLHS does. Every class. Every sport. Every event. Every day. It truly is a blessing to have this vehicle for Christian Education so close to Beautiful Savior. It also is truly a blessing that we are able to hear and be uplifted by the voices and talents of these students.
Enjoy the Festival Singers when they visit Beautiful Savior. Thank them for coming. Pray for them and for the continued opportunities MLHS has to proclaim the gospel and keep Christ at the center of everything they do.
