Out of the Darkness

The signs are showing.  Winter approaches.  Halloween Trick-or-Treaters were greeted with snow flurries on October 31st.  On November 1st, we moved our clocks back one hour.  We do that so as to get a little more daylight in our day, even if that comes early in morning.  Still, the days of winter in North America are filled with more hours of darkness.

There is another darkness we can experience in any season of the year. It is the darkness that comes upon our hearts when we realize how completely afar from our God we have run.  It is the darkness that comes over us when once again we stand face to face with our own weaknesses to live an upright life.  It is the darkness that comes when so many of our efforts to be kind and compassionate to others have fallen short. Such darkness can plunge us into despair.  Such darkness surrounded the writer of Psalm 130:

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

Yet, even in that darkness he knew he could turn to the one who created light itself.  He could turn to the one who set the sun in its place.  He could turn to the one who sent his Son as the light of the world to redeem us from the darkness.  In this one, our God, he trusted.  He trusted him for forgiveness.

But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.

We also can trust in our God for his forgiveness and the light that pulls us out of our own darkness.  The Psalm writer describes this trust as a waiting.  We wait on the action of our God.  We wait for him to lift us up out of the darkness and despair into which we have fallen.  As we wait for our God, we place our complete hope in him.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

What an amazing description of how we wait for our God.  Watchman on the towers of the fortress were supposed to watch for those who would attack them.  How difficult a job in the darkness of night?  They didn’t have spotlights or night-vision goggles when this psalm was written.  How fearful to be peering out into the black of night, unable to see any approaching danger.  How relieving when the sun would arise in the morning bringing light enough to see.  How relieving to know you had come through to the other side.  How relieving when God shines the light of his mercy on us and we know that we are secure in his arms.

There is no uncertainty in our God either.  Just as every single day we simply trust that the sun will rise again out of the darkness, we can have that same simple trust in our God always to rise with forgiveness. The hope we place in him is a sure hope.  He will indeed forgive and redeem us.

O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins. – Psalm 130

Beautiful Savior’s newsletter articles in 2014 will focus on portions from short Psalms.  These Psalms can be easily committed to memory and serve as wonderful prayers and tools for daily meditation on God’s Word.

Month of Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 27, is Thanksgiving Day.  It is certainly appropriate to have a day set aside for Thanksgiving, but we know that every day we have much for which to be thankful.  Will you join in making November a month of thanksgiving?

Each day in November a post will be started on Beautiful Savior’s facebook page asking for your daily thanksgiving.  Comment on that thread, or tweet @bslclaporte using the hashtags #monthofthanks and #dailythanks.  Let’s boldly proclaim our thanks to God for all his blessings!
