Burning Questions: Why Is Easter Important For Me?

Tags :

Burning_QuestionsIt was refreshing, even though the situation certainly wasn’t. Sandy’s mom had spent a wonderful, joy-filled day with her and her ten-month-old daughter. But it took just one moment. What started as a minor health scare quickly escalated, resulting in an emergency trip to the hospital. Less than two days later, Sandy’s mother went home to heaven. They weren’t ready to lose her. If they could have their way, she’d still be here.

So what was so refreshing? “We ask that God’s will be done.” “I’m glad she is in Jesus’ arms.” Throughout the entire tragedy, that’s what Sandy kept saying.

How could she be so upbeat?

She knew the same thing a woman named Martha knew many years ago. Fighting through tears for her brother Lazarus, just laid in the grave, Martha boldly said to Jesus, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day” (John 11:24).

How could she be so confident? How can you be so confident? Death is a part of our world.  It is a consequence of the veil all of us proliferate, whether in big or small ways. That evil is sin; it is our disobedience to God and his will. As a result of sin, you have lost loved ones. As a result of isn, you yourself will lose your life oen day. As a result of our sin and our own evil, God tells us there’s only one place we deserve to be: hell.

In the face of all of that, how can you be confident? You have a loving Savior. Where you and I struggle and fail each day to love and obey God, Jesus never failed. When love for God meant death for Jesus, Jesus died for you. His love for you took him to the cross. His love has taken away all your guilt.

How can you be confident? You have a living Savior. Jesus died, but he is no longer dead. His resurrection is more than just an occasion to commemorate once a year. It is the proof that Jesus not only forgave your sins and conquered hell, but it also proves his promise, “Because I live, you also will live.”

Jesus’ resurrection gives you confidence. His resurrection allows us to say, “I know that my Redeemer lives.” You can be refreshed in every joy and in every sorrow because you know that your Redeemer lives.

Easter: The Victor's Spoils

For forty days we followed our Savior as he battled against sin, death, and the devil.  Jesus defeated every enemy that had its grip on our throats.  He triumphantly proclaimed his victory on Easter Sunday as he rose from the grave.  We have renewed our celebratory cry, “Alleluia! He is risen indeed!”

Jesus is risen indeed!  He is the conquering hero! We not only celebrate his victory, but we also rejoice over the spoils of his war that he now shares with us.

Join us at Beautiful Savior on Sundays, April 27 – June 8th, at 9:30am for this exciting series!

How to Survive the End of the World?

Have you watched a doomsday movie lately?

“The Book of Eli,” “The Darkest Hour,” “The Day After Tomorrow.”

Hollywood keeps producing them. The end of the world both fascinates and frightens. What do we like most about Hollywood’s version? The inspiration of survival. Against all odds, all hope lost, humanity grabs hold of courage, defies doom, and turns the tide.

Hollywood can’t give you the real story.  It merely attempts to adequately capture the descriptions in God’s Word:

The present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men…but the day of the Lord will come like a thief.  The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.” (2 Peter 3:7, 10)

Fire. Destruction. Judgment.

For some it will be a day of judgment and destruction, grief and pain like nothing even seen or imagined before – “eternal death.” For others the end of the world will mark the beginning of a new life where pain and trouble will cease forever.

How can you be among them?  How will you survive?

When that day comes there is no amount of courage which humanity can grab hold of to turn the tide.  It’s the last day; the final end of the cosmic war between God and Satan. The key to survival is Jesus. It was Jesus’ own blood that cleansed us of our sins and rescued us from the clutches of Satan, and it is by Jesus’ own blood, poured out for all our sins that we will be ushered into heaven on that day. By the blood of Jesus we not only survive, but we will be renewed, we will be glorified, and we will be home.  Revelation describes that last day as a joyful day for those in Christ:

And there was a war in heaven…the great dragon was hurled down – that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan…Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ.  For the accuser of our bothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.  They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them!” (Revelation 12:7-12)

You will survive in Christ.

Words from Luther

On November 3rd, we celebrate the Reformation, which kicks off our time of worship focused on End Times.  Here follows a prayer from Martin Luther asking Christ to return:

“Grant, dear Lord God, that the blessed day of thy holy advent may come soon, so that we may be redeemed from this bad, wicked, world, the devil’s dominion, and be freed from the terrible plague which we must suffer from without and within, from wicked people and our own conscience.  Do thou dispatch this old maggot sack that we may finally get a different body, which is not full of sin, inclined to unchasteness and to everything evil, as the present one is, but one that is redeemed from all bodily and spiritual misery and made like unto thy glorious body, dear Lord Jesus Christ, that we may at last come to our glorious redemption.  Amen.

In November we celebrate Thanksgiving.  Here follows a quote from Martin Luther concerning our thanksgiving to God, which he spoke in explanation of Psalm 118:1 – “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

“This verse teaches us what the proper sacrifice is that pleases God most; for we cannot perform any greater or better work for God, nor can we render Him a nobler service than thanking Him.”

The Beauty of Easter

Easter was beautiful, wasn’t it!  Sure the day started with rain and cold – a little of the gloominess that the women who first went out to Jesus tomb felt.  As the sun rose, and the clouds dispersed, Easter Sunday became a beautiful day.  Beautiful Savior’s space was decorated with bright flowers – lilies and tulips and hyacinths – the fresh flower smell permeated the worship space.  Voices joined in the songs we love to sing on Easter Sunday – songs that shout of the victory Jesus won.  Those who attended Beautiful Savior joined together to enjoy the worship, enjoy the gospel, and enjoy each other’s company.  Easter was a beautiful day!

What makes Easter so beautiful really isn’t the decorations, sunshine, and flowers. Easter is beautiful because of the truth it brings to us.  Easter is beautiful because on Easter we remember that Jesus rose to life and all of his promises to us are sure and certain.  On Easter we know that what Jesus shared with Elizabeth at Lazarus’ funeral is sure and certain:

I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11:25)

Easter is beautiful!  Easter means not only that Jesus has life, but that all who put their trust in him also have life.  Not just the life we live right now, but a life that never ends; a life that never experiences real death; a life that is completely fulfilling because it is a life lived in the warmth and light of God’s love; life that is beautiful, because it is no longer smudged and tainted with the darkness of sin; life that God says is a wonderful fragrance that permeates to him and in which he finds pleasure because we have been washed clean in Jesus’ blood; life that is filled with songs of joy and praise; life that swells with the shouts of victory.

The question Jesus asks you is the same question Jesus asked Elizabeth, “Do you believe this?”  Do you believe in everything that is beautiful about Easter?  Do you believe in Jesus’ resurrection?  Do you believe you have the life Jesus promises to you?  If so, what does it lead you to do?  Will you allow Easter to be “one and done”?  Do you only celebrate with exuberance and beauty for one day, or is Easter an every day celebration for you?  Jesus wants the beauty of Easter to shine on every day of your life.  Jesus wants the fragrance of Easter to fill your life every day.  Jesus wants songs of victory to be sung everyday of your life.  Let Easter be more than just a beautiful day.  Let Easter bring a beautiful life.

Reflection:

How might you keep Easter as a part of every day?

Write a prayer asking God to help you keep your focus on the beauty of Easter every day.

Beautiful Savior Welcomes Festival Singers

On Sunday April 14th, Beautiful Savior will be blessed to have numerous young singers lending their voices to our worship service.  The Festival Singers of Michigan Lutheran High School, St. Joseph, Michigan, will be contributing four anthems to our worship service.  Michigan Lutheran High School is funded and organized by the WELS churches in the southwestern area of Michigan and the Northwestern area of Indiana.

While you might say that Michigan Lutheran High School is like any high school in regards to the students, the curriculum, and the extra-curricular activities, there are many things that make it different.  Jesus Christ, and the gospel message, is the central focus of everything MLHS does.  Every class.  Every sport.  Every event.  Every day.  It truly is a blessing to have this vehicle for Christian Education so close to Beautiful Savior.  It also is truly a blessing that we are able to hear and be uplifted by the voices and talents of these students.

Enjoy the Festival Singers when they visit Beautiful Savior.  Thank them for coming.  Pray for them and for the continued opportunities MLHS has to proclaim the gospel and keep Christ at the center of everything they do.

Easter…in March?!

The other day I handed out an invitation to Easter worship.  The invitee thanked me and then said, “Wait!  When is Easter this year?”

“March 31st,” I replied. “It’s early.”

“Yeah! Easter is supposed to be April’s holiday,” she said.

Easter is early this year, isn’t it?  Did you know it’s not even the earliest it can be? Easter can fall as early as March 22. Of course, the last time it did was in 1818 and it won’t happen again until 2285.  I don’t have any delusions I will be around to celebrate it then, but that’s okay.  While the date may change, the celebration is always the same. On Easter we celebrate the day of our Savior’s resurrection to life.  We celebrate his victory over sin and Satan – the victory he won for you.

Easter may be the most important day of all time.  In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul expresses the extreme importance of Easter:

If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” (1 Corinthians 15:17)

Without Easter we would still be stuck in our sins.  Without Easter we would not have the assurance that Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins was accepted by God.  Without Easter we wouldn’t have any hope, any joy, or any life, but Jesus did rise from the dead. After he had suffered our pain and our punishment for our sin, he rose again for our life – to give us new life.  Because of Easter you can join Paul as he expresses the amazing and joyful truth Easter provides:

Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God!  He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)

Easter isn’t just an April holiday.  It isn’t just a March holiday.  Easter is an every-day holiday.  Celebrate Christ’s resurrection every day because through Christ’s resurrection you know you have new life; you know you will rise after your death; you know you will be brought into glory because of what Jesus did for you.  Celebrate Easter with Beautiful Savior on March 31st, and on every Sunday of the year.  Celebrate Easter in your own life every single day by giving thanks to God that you have victory in Christ Jesus!

The Sundays following Easter will begin a 5 week series on Easter as an everyday celebration!

Special Services

Easter is not the only special day we celebrate and remember this month.  Join the family of Beautiful Savior for these other worship opportunities:

SUNDAY MARCH 24TH – PALM SUNDAY – 9:30AM

On Palm Sunday we celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entry into the royal city of Jerusalem.  We see him enter as a king, but this is the beginning of the week that would close with his immense suffering and death.  We join in singing Hosannas to him on this Palm Sunday, knowing he truly is our king.  Join us for worship and our Palm Sunday procession of palm branches. The children of our Sunday School will also lift their voices in a song of praise to our Savior.

THURSDAY MARCH 28TH – MAUNDY THURSDAY – 7:00PM

On the night on which he was betrayed Jesus took bread, gave thanks and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat.  This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”  We remember the evening of Jesus’ betrayal and the night on which he instituted the Lord’s Supper with a solemn service.  Join us for a service in which we will remember the words of Jesus’ last will and testament.  Lord’s Supper will be offered in this evening service.

FRIDAY MARCH 29TH – GOOD FRIDAY
SERVICE OF THE CROSS – 3:00PM
SERVICE OF DARKNESS – 7:00PM

Jesus died on Good Friday. How can the day of death be called good?  Jesus died to rescue us.  He died so that we might have life.  Join the family of Beautiful Savior as we stand before Jesus’ cross and thank him that he gave his life for us. His Cross.  His Crown. Our Victory!

SUNDAY MARCH 31ST – EASTER SUNDAY
SUNRISE SERVICE – 7:00AM
EASTER RECEPTION – 8:15AM
CELEBRATION SERVICE – 9:30AM

Easter Sunday morning is a morning filled with magnificence.  Just as the sun rises on a new day, our Beautiful Savior Jesus rose again to life.  Celebrate the victory God won for us!
