Asking the Questions
“How are we going to pay for that?”
Have you ever asked that question? At some point in your life you’ve probably had to ask it. Sometimes, the sadly given answer might have been, “We aren’t. We can’t afford it.”
Do churches ever have to ask this question?
Churches have expenses too. Beautiful Savior is no exception. Beautiful Savior has a budget. Beautiful Savior has to ask, “How are we going to pay for that?” Sometimes that can be a difficult question to answer, but recently we received some very good news.
In the 2013-2014 fiscal year Beautiful Savior received subsidy from the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod Home Missions Board. This board oversees the distribution of funding made available by our church body for mission congregations. In some cases this funding is used to start a new congregation or to ensure a congregation has funding available to continue to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Beautiful Savior is one such congregation. This present fiscal year we were granted $70,000 in subsidy funds. We also were responsible to apply for continued subsidy by submitting reports and a ministry plan to the Michigan District Mission Board, who in turn approved and passed on our request to the Home Missions Board. The Michigan DMB has reported to Beautiful Savior that we will receive our subsidy request of $67,000 for the next fiscal year. This covers over half of our $120,000 budget.
This subsidy is a huge blessing for Beautiful Savior because it allows us to carry out gospel ministry. However, our goal as a congregation will always be to become self-supporting. Beautiful Savior is in the “business” of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We freely proclaim the good news of Jesus to each other and the community. We do not have a product to sell, nor do we exist to make a profit, instead Beautiful Savior is supported by her members, who have committed themselves to support the work of gospel ministry. This is pleasing to our Lord and Savior. God desires his people give gifts of thanksgiving as offerings to him. As we work together to cover more of our budget on our own, other congregations will benefit. Can you imagine what God might accomplish if the $67,000 we will receive next year could be used elsewhere?
It is a huge blessing for Beautiful Savior to receive subsidy from the generous gifts of brothers and sisters in Christ spread across our country. It is also a huge blessing when the people of Beautiful Savior give generously of their blessings to support the gospel ministry. If you’re wondering what encouragements God gives for his people to give look at these Bible passages: 1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 9:7, 12. Use them as you plan and assess your own giving. Consider them as you consider how you support the work for Christ’s kingdom at Beautiful Savior.
What can you do to support Beautiful Savior? Respond to God’s blessings to you with generosity, cheerfulness, and regularity. Assess your own giving by asking these reflection questions:
Does my offering reflect my love for my Savior and my desire to support the spread of his gospel?
Does this percentage of what I have reflect my commitment to my Lord?
Am I giving with confidence God will continue to supply all I need?
